Angry getting linux RH 6.1 to connect to Optimum Online

I am a newbie to Linux and need some help with setting up a box as router. I have a linux box setup with two 3Com NICs (3c509 and 3c509b) both of which are recognised by the kernel ( tried setting up the box individually with each of the cards). One of the cards is connected to the internal network via the interface
Code:
eth1
.
Code:
eth0
is setup as a dhcp client. I'd read somewhere that Optimum Online that I use in Connecticut does not work with
Code:
dhcpcd
that comes with RH6.1 . So I downloaded ISC's
Code:
dhclient
compiled it and set it up according to their instructions. However, when the machine comes up interface
Code:
eth0
fails to pick up an IP address. It comes up with customary ISC messages then the following:
Code:
Listening on LPF/eth0/00:20:af:3e:ca:68
Sending on LPF/eth0/00:20:af:3e:ca:68
Sending on Socket/fallback/fallback-net
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 4
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 7
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 7
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 13
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 21
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 1
No DHCPOFFERS received.
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.

done.
My
Code:
dhcp.leases
file does not contain any entries. I do not know if this is the problem. Any help will be appreciated.

Rajan.

do you have a hostname assigned by your ISP?

You may need to use it to set your dhcp_hostname

As far as I know, there is no hostname. I can login from any machine (meaning the connection is not tied to the MAC address of the NIC) as long as I go through the same cable modem.

This is what I get when I do an 'ipconfig' on my Win2k workstation (if at all this info will be of any use).

Quote:

C:\>ipconfig

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 24.44.237.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.240.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 24.44.224.1

In reference to the previous post, I also dug up, from the registry of the Win2k machine, the following attribute and value:

Quote:

DhcpServer: 167.206.112.99
