Get usb.c: ignoring set_interface when pluging in a Belkin USB Direct Connect Cable

I am attempting to create a USB/USB private network between two Linux Boxes running RedHat 7.3 using the 2.4.18-3 Kernel. I am hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. I understand that the 2.4 Kernel is an older kernel and that my life might be easier if I was allowed to upgrade to the 2.6 Kernel, but at this time, I must remain on the old Kernel.

I believe that I have the usbnet module loaded because I am typing "modprobe usbnet" before connecting the usb device

but I am getting the following message
~usb.c: ignoring set_interface for dev7, iface 0, alt 0

I need to figure out how to load the correct driver and assign an IP address to the device.

i.e. I am trying to figure out what modules are required to be loaded, an ideal of how to configure the Linux box to use the USB File Transfer Cable to talk to each other, etc.
