Get me started logging in to my university's network

I have been using Slackware for a number of years now, but I am a complete noob to networking. I did some searches here, but I really don't even know what to look for. Can anyone point me to howtos or other documents to get me started toward logging on to my university's network? IT here does not offer support for Linux, but I know there are people logging on with Mac OS X. How do I find out if the network runs a samba server? Are there other ways besides samba to log on? All I need to do is access my network drive, and a network printer. I already have Internet access through a simple tcp/ip configuration. VPN is not an option.
Thanks, Mike.

Did your network admin give you any documentation for how to access network resources? Probably they are running Windows file sharing, but there is other stuff out there too. If macs can access it, though, it's probably Vanilla SMB stuff. If you just want to access it, you probably don't need to install the SAMBA server so long as you have client capabilities. In Konqueror you can type smb://sharename/directoryname to be taken to a directory on a particular share, being prompted for a user name and password if needed. You can use the smbmount command to mount SAMBA file systems. This can be automated in /etc/fstab.

Hope that helps.

I tried accessing the share with konqueror as you suggested, but it will not let me, it tells me

An error occurred while loading smb://sharename/directory:

Connection to host smb://sharename/directory is broken.

I assumed the share name and directory would be those that appear in Windows under My Computer.
