get around router restriction
My school provides a wired network to one computer per outlet, but they do not allow students connect the cable from one outlet to the router.
Is there anyway I can get around this problem if I want to use more than one computer to connect to the internet using this one outlet? |
well firstly we are not here to get around things. you need to comply with the regulations you are subject to.
secondly, it would totally depend how they do this... you say router... do you mean a switch? you could easily have issues with a switch as the switch on the other end of the cable can easy refuse to communicate with more than one mac address per device. you could easily hide this behind a snat router, that could be a simple ethernet router or a linux box with two nics and a few tweaks. |
i conneted a standard router to the ethernet outlet and tried to connect multiple computers to that router, but it did not work.
Can if I setup one of my linux machine as a router (found the setup tutoial on the net) and connect a router to this linux machine so that other machine can connect to the Internet via this router? |
again, do you actually mean a router?? you would want to just use ip masquarading under linux and hang a switch of the inside. you would want no other layer 3 traffic management outside of that.
