gentoo modprobe what

i am trying to install gentoo on a virtual machine in vmware. The instructions say i need to type modprobe pcnet32 where pcnet32 is replaced with my network card. I have a basic linksys 10/100 network card. what should i put there? should i put modprobe and then the vmware ethernet adapter? either way i still dont know what to do there.
