Gentoo Livecd Ethernet issues

Trying to compile gentoo on my Emachines m6809 laptop(amd64 build). Ethernet card is shown by ifconfig (a VIA rhine card) and I can change settings through net-setup. however i can ping absolutely nothing, including my roommate's mac. His Ethernet card runs under the livecd just fine. suggestions?

This should help;
Installing Gentoo

The latest Gentoo LiveCD's come with an "emachines" kernel specifically for this laptop. It should be possible to boot the CD using "emachines" or "emachines-nofb".
