gentoo emerge

Hello, I have recently going to a new college. My gentoo worked on a DSL modem, then I had a friend help me set it up for college. He removed several things from rc-update. I am now at the college and am trying an emerge. It doesn't seem to work, just wondering what should I add for emerge? thx ty

IS emerge not workng at all, or is it just the networking that's dead? Can you "emerge -s" ?

If yes, then you probably just need to get networking going again.
