Generating UDP data gram using netcat

I am trying to generate some UDP datagram using netcat (nc), to see how big is the maximum UDP size that my computer can send and receive. But I don't have any idea how to do that.

Any idea how to specify the amount of UDP datagram when using netcat?

Wouldn't it be easier to use a proper "packet generator" for that?

Look at your distro and external repo's or Freshmeat, Sourceforge, or http://www.stearns.org/doc/pcap-apps.html?
