I have a production SuSE Linux 8 system that frequently on reboot will not load the default gateway setting in yast2. If we resave the route it will then show in a netstat -r. Also you can run a default add route gw <IP> and it will load. We have tried putting that in a script in the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory, which is the default run level, but that doesn't always work effectively.

I'm not sure what else would be a factor. We have another similarly configured system sitting right next to it, on the same subnet, that will not have probelms. They are being rebooted at about the exact same time.

This is a full duplex Gigabit network. The servers are HP DL 380 G4 servers, which are P4s and support gigabit transmissions. Cat 6 cables connect to 3com switches.

Any insight you can provide on this is really appreciated.

If you have multiple NICs make sure you haven't configured a "default route" for each of them. Like Highlander, There Can Be Only One (default).
