Gateway
Hi,
i can't access internet.
internet facility is provided by the building where i live. its a big building. to give access to more user and secure it they have made subnets. i have 5 machines in total. Internet provider has given me one subnet. settings are as follows.
IP Range. 10.54.0.1 - 10.54.0.55
subnet address: 255.254.0.0
Default gate way : 10.0.0.1
Primary DNS : 212.54.162.1
Secondary DNS : 212.54.162.2
now in my case.
in one machine i have installed windows 2000 advance server. and given it an ip address that is 10.54.0.1. this is my server.
on other two machines i have installed windows 2000 professional. and there ip adresses are 10.54.0.3 and 10.54.0.4 respectively. these two machines are clients.
i have another two PCs. on one machine i have installed Redhat Linux 9 as server, and on second machine i have installed Redhat Linux 9 as workstation.Ip adresses are 10.54.0.2 and 10.54.0.5 respectively
i have used star topplogy. i have one switch and all pcs are connected with each other through switch. that's all what i have. settings given to me internet providers. and gateway address is a router address.
internet is working fine on windows machines.but not on linux machines.
on linux machines.
i can ping all ip addresses with in my subnet.
i can ping primary and secondary dns
but i can not ping default gateway. it says network unreachable
when i use route -n command. it doesnot show default gateway. only shows * in that list.
if i manully try to add default gateway. again it says network unreachable.
in configuration files it shows default gateway.

Try:
Code:
route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.254.0.0 dev eth0
route add default gw 10.0.0.1
This assumes eth0 is the connected interface.

it has worked. but when i restart computer these settings from routing table disappear. everytime i have to do this.
other thing is iam not clear about this command
route add -net 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.254.0.0 dev eth0
i understand the syntax of command, but what is 10.0.0.0. as my ip is 10.54.0.1.
also
what settings i have to do so that i dont have to issue this command again and again.

Yes, but your network is 10.0.0.1. Or rather, the network of your router. Interestingly enough, your gateway is not on the same network as your computer. (Network in the IP sense, not the ethernet sense).
