Unhappy gaim connects only once.

I just installed gaim, it seems to work fine.
When my linux box boots, I just type "gaim" in a console window, and I have the connexion box, and I connect to MSN perfectly.
But if y happen to close the gaim windows, it seems to stop definitively.
If I type "gaim" again, the connexion box appears and then it hangs about one minute ending with "cannot connect" message.
Even rebooting does not solve that. If I want to connect again, i have to reboot both the linux system and the Sock4 server system!
Did I miss something ? Is there a special way to stop gaim ? Or do I have to kill something before restarting gaim ?
