Full Remote Desktop, is it posible ?

Dear All.

I have 2 Linux boxes, A & B.
The A box is a powerfull server, but does not have a monitor attached on it.
The B computer is an ordinary computer.
I want to use A remotelly from B.
Is it posible to view the full desktop of A on B ?
I mean, I want see KDE's panel and use the menu of A from B.

Currently, I can only run remote applications on windows,
not a full desktop.

Thank you.

Try VNC, but be carefull, it's a backdoor program. Anyway the best solution is to connect the monitor to the powerfull system.

Try VNC.

What backdoor do you mean ?

That is not posible.
The B is a laptop, while the A is a desktop box.
I bought the B without a monitor since I had limited budget. :D

I was doing mathematical simulation in the A computer,
and I could do it just fine with ssh from the laptop.
However, I want to try something else now :)

re again

if your A is connected to the internet and you're using VNC than your A could be in danger since anyone knowing your ip can connect to your A. If you're really good you could set up a firewall and prevent unauthorised access

You say you're running remote applications, I assume (perhaps wrongly) they are X apps. If that is the case You could try starting a full desktop session 'startkde' of 'gnome-session'.

If this conflicts with the running desktop try a another X session. As root and from a tty run /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 :1 &', then 'export DISPLAY=:1' for that session. This uses a lot of resources, to have two X sessions running, so be warned.

rjliebenberg, your idea sounds good. My laptop has 256MB memory, maybe its enough.

Currently I just do simple things.
* Open X terminal on the laptop
* run ssh the_server

So I'm not so sure with your suggestion.

I run KDE on my laptop too, though I can switch to fluxbox if I need spare memory. No GNOME.

Where should I perform this command. On the B (laptop) or on the A (server) after I ssh-ed from A.

Thanks

Moreover, I could sacrifice of having no local X-session on the laptop, only text console.
Is it posible to have 1 remote X-session from the console ?
