Full bridge mode modem/router giving timeout waiting for PADO.
 

Hi everyone!

I'm having some problems doing something which seems quite standard, and I just can't seem to find the solution to it as hard as I search.

I've got a modem/router which is under a lot of strain through excessive traffic. I'm trying to resolve this by turning the router into just a modem by putting it into full bridge mode.

The router appears to have been successfully put into this mode, as it does not respond to pings or trying to access the web-interface.

I have tried using pppoeconf in Ubuntu and Smoothwall's pppoe interface control to connect to the PPPoA provider through the modem/router in full bridge mode (from my understanding this should be ok, as full bridge creates a PPPoA to PPPoE bridge). All I'm getting in the logs in both cases is "Timeout waiting for PADO packets".

From what I've found out, the PPPoE software sends out a PADI (PPPoE Active Discovery Initation) packet from the ethernet port, expecting a PADO (PPPoE Active Discovery Offer) packet from a PPPoE capable device.

I'm using a Linksys WAG200G as the bridging modem - do my results mean that the router isn't answering correctly, or is it something to do with the ISP (Pipex UK)?

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm about ready to tear my hair out!

I eventually gave up on using a commercially available router, as it appeared that none of the models I tried worked in this mode (or there was something I didn't understand about the setup). Nevertheless, I couldn't find anybody who understood enough about it to be able to explain what was wrong. I eventually used a Draytek Vigor 120 connected to an old PC turned Smoothwall router, which does the job perfectly. Here's a link to my blog post about how I sorted it. I had the same issue but after long long testing I came up with the strangest solution....

Bij doublechecking everything triple, I saw that during startup linux wined about a missing firmware /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/trl8168-1.fw in module 9.
The NIC worked but pppoe not... So because I already tried everything I run apt-get install firmware-realtek and automagically my pppoe connection worked..

Still not sure why only ppp did not work on the nic but the normal stuff did work...
