Has anyone found that RedHat9 has a limit to how much can be transferred with FTP? I seem to hit a limit FTP'ing in or out of my Linux box, but it's not consistent. Sometimes it's about 100K, sometimes it's about 800K, or somewhere in between. I didn't have this problem before I upgraded to RH9 (from 7.2). Has anyone else seem this?
Doesn't sound like a limit to me. If it was a limit it would be consistent. Gimme some more info on what EXACTLY you're trying to do and any error messages you get.
Thanks adz:
OK, here's what I just tried.
I work on a college campus - I logged into the campus UNIX system, them ftp'd to my Linux box. Then:
ftp> put Testfile.exe
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening BINARY mode data connection for Testfile.exe.
426 Data Connection: Connection reset by peer.
ftp>
The file I was trying to transfer is 1220670 bytes, in a couple of seconds it had transferred 786196, where it stayed for about 3 minutes, then it got to 815396 bytes, stayed at that for about 5 minutes, then got the "Connection reset" event.
I tried it again with the same result, but this time only got 102200 bytes transferred before it gave up.
I see the same thing trying to ftp out of the Linux box, and if I try to ftp in with Windows or Mac.
I'm mystified!
Well it sounds to me like the timeout is being activated. As to why I'm not entirely sure. I assume you have more than enough bandwidth to do this and there aren't a million people trying to get on at once? Are you doing this at the busiest time of day or does it happen at all times? How many computers are there between your desktop computer and the linux box? Do you have control over all of them? If not contact the network admin.
Another experiment you can do is check to see if it's a problem with DHCP. Do you use DHCP? A good way to check is to time the intervals for which you get any transfer with a stopwatch. If they're the same each time (in terms of time not bytes) then it could be some sort of DHCP problem.
