ftp service

hello,
i am using an iso image with kernel 2.4.25,in it ftp service is built in ,but when i use it to transfer files from one pc to another it gives an error which is :
ftp:unknown service
is there anyway to resolve it.

do you have more details about this live cd? what is it? Knoppix? Either way i'd think that the error you have is possibly down to a missing entry in /etc/services, or a missing file altogether. Why a suitable entry would be missing I coulsn't say... i have an entry in mine that reads:

ftp             21/tcp
ftp             21/udp          fsp fspd

make sure you have a suitable equivalent in yours

i have downloaded rescue cd templete from http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/~purschke/RescueCD/
it is redhat 9 based. when i ftp from cd to my linux machine it says tcp/ftp : unknown service
I have checked /etc/services it has entry
ftp 21/tcp
ftp 21/udp fsp fspd
