Hey guys, I have a sun server connected to my dell laptop for internet. I've port forwarded 21 on my router, and it's pointed to my laptops static IP (192.168.1.8). I started the ftp service on the sun, and it works fine locally. But when I try to connect to my ftp server with the external IP, it doesn't work. Anyone know what's wrong?
Thanks for the reply but that didn't solve my problem. I tried using an FTP server on the laptop (Windows XP) and I could connect fine to the server with the external IP. But I can't get connected to the sun servers FTP. Any reasons why this would happen? Maybe something needs to be setup on the sun server.
So you have a server on the xp and you could access it from outside, correct?
When you put a server on the sun you then could not access it from outside but only inside correct?
I'd assume ports or nat issue. Did you change the router to nat to the sun box after you played with the xp?
What do you mean by that? The NAT Filtering is open (not secure) on my router. But that's the only option I could find on my routers settings. Do I need to setup NAT on the laptop or something?
Depends on the setup. I can't say. I run a router that has the public ip on one side and private ip's on the lan. The internet connection is also in the router. If I were to need some public IP to access a lan ip I'd need to nat it in the router.
Okay, so I have my dell laptop connected to my netgear wnr2000v2 wireless router, and it's connected to my cable modem.
My sun server is connected to my dell laptop for internet, and Im trying to run an FTP server off of it. The ftp server works fine on the dell, but it won't work on the sun. And of course my router has the public IP on it's side, and it gives out private IPs. If you need any information let me know, thanks. And yes i have port forwarded 21.

So just so I have this straight, your network setup is:
Internet -> Cable Modem -> Wireless Router -> Dell Laptop -> Sun Server
Is that right? If so, do you have the Dell set up to forward FTP ports to the Sun server? You also might want to have a read here since forwarding just port 21 isn't sufficient for FTP to work.
Yes sir that's my setup, but how would I setup the dell to forward to the sun? Thanks, by the way I'm checking out your site
The short answer is that you'll have to set up your Dell as some sort of a router so that you can write iptables rules to forward the packets to the Sun server. To be honest, it might be a better idea to connect the Sun directly to the router if that is possible.
