FTP Server IP address problem

I have a small network with with 3 computers networked and all use Private IP addresses in the 192.168 ...range
Computer 1uses Windows XP Pro and has cable modem attached and others share its use to connect to Internet. This has a default gateway IP address.
I decided to put Linux Red Hat 9 onto Computer 2. I want to set up computer 2 as an FTP server. I can connect to it from the other two computers internally by using its Host IP address but cannot log on from a remote PC.

Is there a way to logon remotely using Computer 1 Default gateway address to logon to Computer 2 which has a Private address.
I cant put Linux on Computer 1

Hope someone can help
Thanks

Welcome to LQ.

By remote computer I assume you mean a computer not on your LAN? You can use a program on Comp 1 like analogx portmapper to forward port 21 to the intrenal ip address of the server.

Windows XP has built in NAT routing. Look at the advanced preferences of the internet connection, you can forward conections through to a local IP address on specific ports.
