FTP problems

Hi all,

I have a home network of Windows machines all connected to the web through a RH 8 box which I use as a DNS, DHCP, mail, samba server, etc. It is also my router. When I try to access an FTP site on the web with Internet Explorer, I get an error message saying:

500 Illegal PORT Command
500 Unknown Command

Could this be because I have something configured wrong on my Linux router? Please let me know what you think! Thanks!!

Chris

PS. I am not running a firewall and am using NAT and IP Masquerading.

Are you trying to get to an external site that isn't yours with IE using FTP? And this Windows box is connected thru the router? How are you trying to connect to every FTP site, like by clicking a link or typing it in yourself? If typing yourself, how are you typing it as the errors your giving us seem to point to a invalid way to connect not using the right command, etc.

Try enabling passive mode in Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Use Passive FTP).

Use Passive FTP is checked already, David. Sometimes I connect by clicking a link, sometimes by typing it manually. Sometimes it works and I get in. Sometimes, it doesn't work!

Chris

So, I take it you guys don't think it's a problem with the Linux server/router?

If your on a windows machine trying to FTP to the Linux server, try this:

At a command prompt:

ftp <domain-name or ip address>

And see if that connects you. If so, its a problem most likely with IE not passing the correct commands to connect to the FTP server.

IE is notorious for being a pain in the butt when using FTP. I steer clear and usually use command line FTP or GFTP (on my linux box). As long as your RH 8 box has the correct ports open (21 and 23, I think?) you should be fine.

23 is for telnet - ports 21 and 20 are used for ftp.

WS_FTP or SmartFTP are fairly good ftp clients for Windows. Like slightcrazed - I use gftp in linux.
