ftp problems

Pease help me with a problem I have trying to ftp to my RH7 Linux box.
I can login as anonymous by entering an email adress but once I get the "Guest login ok. access restrictions apply" message I can't get any further. Also I can only login as anonymous.

Any help would be appreciated.

do you get the Name/user prompt?
if so, does the user exist in /etc/passwd?

What specifically are you trying to do as anonymous?

Depending on what ftp server you're using, allowing anonymous uploads may be disabled.

Yes I get the user prompt. If I enter "mik" (a valid user) followed by the password for mik I get "Login incorrect. Login failed."
and yes the user mik appears in /etc/passwd.
I can only login as anonymous but I can not "cd"

I wish to "get" some files using ftp. I am using wu-ftp. I think I need to modify a file but I don't know which one.

Thanks

Assuming you are try to ftp to "server"
1st try
ssh m1k@server

If this is OK, then "ftp server". On "server":
tail -f /var/log/messages
and in another server window (a bissel hairy), after you have typed "ftp server" on the client:
ps aux|grep ftp - shows pid
strace -f -p pid

Continue ftp login and, hopefully, you will extract info from the output.

my previous reply was somewhat arcane.

I have proftp running - if this is what u have, man proftpd and
reading /etc/proftpd.conf would be of value.

Thanks for your reply although I am sorry but I didn't understand the first one.
I am not running proftp I am using wu-ftp which comes with the Linux version I have (RH7). I have it configured as my ftp server and I am trying to log in to from my win98 machine.

I had some annoying problems with ftp before, check to see what ftp services you are running on your linux. Perhaps you have to add some, remove some...
