FTP problem with two ethernet interfaces...
Howdy,
I am having a problem with ftp on my linux box running RedHat 7.1 (Seawolf), kernel 2.4.2-2. I am trying ftp to the linux box using a perl script on another machine on the same network. This works fine with one interface active, but fails when both interfaces are activated.
After doing a packet trace, I can see that the linux box never sends the authenication parameter acknowledgement packet when both interfaces are active.
I'm not sure of the ftp daemon version, ftpd -V gives an unknown flag error. It is the daemon that came with the RedHat version I a running though.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

This sounds like it could be a software bug, as the presence of a second interface shouldn't make any difference (assuming you haven't done something strange like set them both on the same IP address or played with their MAC address to make them the same). What Kernel & FTP daemon you using, precise versions would be good - someone might know if there is a bug - i'd also have a look at the web site of the people who produced the FTP daemon.

Are you sure that there are no hardware conflicts between the two cards? IRQ?
Post the output of your ifconfig and route commands. Let us know which interface you are trying to hit when both are on.

If the interface was present yet not up it would still cause a conflict wouldn't it??

Sure there would be a conflict, but I would still think that either card would work as long as both were not active together. (Just an observation from experience, but I am not willing to bet the farm).
That is probably not the problem anyway.
KConway: Also post the lines relevant to you ethernet adaptors from the output of dmesg.

Results of dmesg:
eth0: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0xe800, IRQ 9, 00:00:B4:97:AC:B9
eth1: RealTek RTL-8029 found at 0xec00, IRQ 9, 00:00:B4:97:D9:47
Results of ifcfg:
same h/w config as above, plus listings of ip addresses, number of packets, etc.
Results of route -n:
simply has the netmask (255.255.255.0) in line with each card's subnet...flags = U, Metric = 0, Ref = 0, Use = 0
Thanks,
Kevin Conway

Are these ISA cards? If so the you'll want to change the IRQs so they won't conflict, however it they're PCI cards then it should work with shared IRQs, although I still seperate them if you can. You might end up having to use a DOS config tool from the NIC manufactureres web site to set the IRQs.
cheers
