FTP performance
Hi,
I am currently copying about 7 iso images from my Fedora Core 4 system to my Mac OS X system using FTP. I am using Mac's built-in ftp server and gftp. The fedora system is connected directly to my d-link router using a 100MB network card, and the mac is connected wirelessly. The router only support 802.11b which gives a max of 11mbs. I thought I would get resonable performance, but gFtp reports that the files are transferring somewhere around 500Kb/s. Is there anyway for me to increase this bandwidth?
I also tried this using to XP machines that were connected directly to the router. Both systems used a 100mb card. The performance on these were a little better at times, it went anywhere from 100kbs to 4mbs.
What is that I am misunderstanding about all of these numbers?

In a network the bandwith is given by the speed of the slowest link ( I hope U understand my english ) So in your case , it does not matter is the bandwith of the NIC card for the pc's is 100 mhz , the speed of the link is given by the Router in this case which is 11 Mhz maximum .
Your data is also contain into a disk , so the CPU has to get into the disk , get the data ,
pack it , and send it to the receiving computer , so you need to consider the speed of the
CPU , the speed of the hard disk , the front bus etc , plus how good the protocl handles the packing and unpaking of the information

500 kilobytes/sec is reasonable for a 802.11b card. If you need faster, get 802.11g.
4 megabytes/sec is physically impossible for 802.11b cards. The theoretical maximum is 1.375 megabytes/sec but that doesn't take overhead into account.

When I ftp files over my wired network (100mb/s) I get about 5mbps, so we have a similar ratio of connection speed:download speed (I don't know the terminology, I don't know much about networks  )
