ftp log files
Hi there

I have RH 7 and have created a FTP server. I would like to access the logs to see what is happening but I am unable to find them. Does the FTP server automatically creat a log files In the /var partition or must I have a logging programe to do this?

Thanking you for your input

Check in /var/log. This is where all the default system logs are for RedHat, including those used by the FTP server installed by RedHat.

Unless you've installed your own FTP server from source, RH comes with wu-ftpd. It uses /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure, and /var/log/xferlog to place information about failed and successfull logins, and which files are transferred.

Again, assuming you're using the default built-in ftp server, you might check in /etc/xinet.d/wu-ftpd and see if you have set any flags that either redirect or surpress logging.

If you're not using the built in ftp server, then it totally depends on where you installed your server, how your server is started, and of course which server you're using.
