Ok, thanks for the elaboration. I'll research the nobody owner further, esp for Fedora, so I'm more clear on why it works for us in the office but not at home.
So to run without the username map means to just comment out that line in the smb.conf file, restart smb, and see what happens? I assume then that if I observe no difference, then we look elsewhere; however if things start work without further complication, where do you see that path going? In the meantime, I'll try what I just said and assume that I've understood your instruction correctly.
On your last question, yes, the user in question is known to have 501/501 set. On Fedora, users start at 500, so 501 is my second user. I can login directly on the target system ("momma") without difficulty for this user and access the files. So on the face of it, the basic user settings seem fine.
Yeah, just remove the reference to the username map file, give Samba a restart, and see what happens.
If commenting out the username map works, then check that file and make sure the username doesn't map to something invalid. You might even post that file up here if commenting out that line works.
So, you're assigning each user a unique username and groupname? Is that how I'm reading this?
Ok, I tried it and restarted SMB. No change. Below is the output from /var/log/messages:

Yes, by default Fedora assigns each user a separate group with the same GID. This is common and is not often changed on the systems I've ever worked on. Here are some excerpted lines from my /etc/passwd file:
Hrm. . .my only thought now is to delete the user and re-create them, and don't assign the same UID/GID to them. Hopefully since it's just this one user, that might fix things.
I'm just curious, though. . .have you tried making the user owner of the files they are trying to access to see if that works?
I manage a group of clients each with a FC6 samba server.. I have been trying (without success) to resolve the issue with panics for almost 9 months...
I've tried complete tear down and rebuilds using different database (TDB) and a small amount of work on Network resolution..
These PANICS are a major problem to me and any help would be greatly appreciated
