From desktop to network

I'm currently on a desktop pc and would like to convert
the desktop to a file server (also experiment with web
and email server before going online) connected to a
laptop client. All wired, no wireless stuff.

Does this mean the laptop requires 2 network cards:
one to connect to the file server and one to connect
to a router for internet access?

OS: Debian Wheezy
Router: http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/d...TL-WR740N#spec

Maybe
You aren't telling us enough about the layout of your network to say, however the only reason you'd need two physical adapters is if you had to connect two discrete physical networks, it doesn't sound like you have that (you have only 1 router) so probably not.

Thanks.

@ Moderator: I posted this thread in the Networking forum first, where it appeared shortly, then disappeared so posted a new one in the Hardware forum as I thought it had been rejected, and just noticed it appeared again in the Networking forum.
