Fresh Slackware 10 Install, forcedeth question

I did a fresh install of Slackware 10, and found the network to not be working. Ping did not get out, lynx did not find web pages. ifconfig only listed lo, not any eths.

After some research, I learned about forcedeth for nforce2 chipsets. I noticed it was loaded as reported by lsmod. After cycling with rmmod/lsmod, eth0 showed up in ifconfig, and everything seems to work.

Even after rebooting.

Any ideas what was going on?

run the command
Code:
cat /proc/interrupts
and make sure your ethernet is not conflicting with another onboard device. I had to disable firewire support via the BIOS to get my forcedeth module to work properly. It and USB were conflicting and after I disabled the 1394 the usb found another IRQ and everything was good. I upgraded to the 2.6.8 kernel without a problem as well, runs great.

cat /proc/interrupts gives (partial):

11: 1727778 XT-PIC NVidia nForce2, eth0, usb-ohci

Not sure if that is a conflict or not ...

The ethernet interface is working now, though.

yeah your usb and ethernet are sharing that IRQ but as long as it doesn't effect your speeds of uploading/downloading whatever it's not an issue
