freezes when modprobe orinoco_cs

I searched through countless forums for this issue and still have yet to come to a relevant solution.

HP pavillion ze 4420us notebook pc
Microsoft MN-520 Wireless Adapter (pcmcia)
Gentoo Linux kernel 2.6.7
AMD Mobile 2200XP
700+ MB RAM

At bootup with card in or when inserting wireless card I get this message:

cardmgr[5864]: socket 0: Microsoft Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-520 1.0.3
cardmgr[5864]: excecuting: 'modprobe hermes'
cardmgr[5864]: excecuting: 'modprobe orinoco'
cardmgr[5864]: excecuting: 'modprobe orinoco_cs'

After that last line, system locks-up and I must turn off the machine to continue. I've recompiled the kernel with different options with no success. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
