force kmail to show new mail on startup

I was wondering how to make kmail show only new mail when I open kmail, as I have had a look around it's settings but cannot find any that refer to what i'm asking. Thanks in advance for any help.

Question

Your wording is ambiguous. Do you want Kmail to hide previously read messages, or make it show new mail as soon as you launch the program?

Settings
Configure
Accounts
Click the drop down "Retrieval options"
Check the box "Check mail on startup"

At least, that's what it looks like for me.

I'm not trying to be rude or hostile but I don't think you understand my question, so let me be as clear as I possibly can be;

kmail IS checking mail at startup (and interval checking for that matter)
I AM getting mail with kmail (and CAN send it using kmail, for that matter)

When I open kmail I ONLY see a list of the senders names and have to go though each one until I see UNREAD messages (or use the menu option 'Go > Next Unread Message'). I would like kmail (when opened/launched) to ONLY display any UNREAD/NEW messages that have been sent since the last time I checked my mailbox/opened/launched kmail (messages that I have NOT READ yet).

Can you please tell me if you understand what I'm asking? I'm sorry if I overserly was not clear in my original question.

PS. Sorry if I've replyed twice as firefox had an episode and do not send my original reply for whatever reason(s).

There's a little filter icon next to the search bar. Click it, then "Unread."
