Smile for help about network traffic in kernel-level programe


i want to write some programes about network traffic manage,one function,let me can know the network traffic in time.
i just want to learn more about the network protocol.But i do not know how to start my programe.i think i should know the kenel codes of linux which have function of capture the data from network.
please help me or just remind me,thanks.

I would suggest two books by O'Reilly for starters;

Understanding the Linux Kernel
Linux Kernel in a Nutshell
and
Internet Core Protocols: The Definitive Guide
