file transfer with cross-over cable (RH9.0 to XP)

Hi,

I have a linux laptop and want to move several GB of files to an XP laptop avoiding our very slow network.

I have a cross over cable and I know that my samba server is running OK.

When both latops are connected to the network the XP machine can connect via samba to the linux machine, but, when i connect them with the cross over cable i get no joy....

Is there some vital step i am missing out?

Thanks for any help...

Check to make sure the network devices are not configured for DHCP. If so reconfigure for a static IP address.

Both the computers have static IP addresses on the network.

They have different subnets though.

Check to see if the interface LEDs are illuminating.
Check the output of ifconfig to verify the correct IP / netmask information. For example:
PC 1 - 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
PC 2 - 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0

Disable any firewallls.
Try pinging from each PC.
