file transfer between my machines over the Internet
I have a laptop always-on with a permanent terrestrial connection to the Internet and another 285km away occasionally on with a satellite connection to the Internet, is it possible to transfer files from my satellite machine to my terrestrial machine? VPN? How?
The satellite connection has a static IP address, I think the terrestrial connection also is static but I have to check. I have root access on both.
Rsync is probably the way to go. It works nowadays over SSH by default so it is secure in that regard. Then for the transfer, it only transfers the changes so that saves greatly on bandwidth.
Otherwise, if you are transferring whole files singly or in small numbers scp, as mentioned above, or sftp work. (Note, that is sftp not ftp)
