File Sharing: NFS or SMB?
 

Ok here's the question, newbified....

Currently we run 1 RH9 server, 1 Win2k server, and 3 Win2k Clients....

In 1 week we plan to have all our computers running RH9...

However because of the limitations of some software suites (for instance MacroMedia) we will be running DualBoot on a few machines....

I've just been reading about File Sharing, and as I understand I have 2 options

NFS or Samba

Now.. if I run Samba I can set it up as the PDC, which is a bonus, but is it nessessary? nah I don't think so... probably more work than is needed as everyone in our office only uses their own computer...

So which one is faster? which one is better? which one is going places? which one is easier to use for salespeople with no IT knowledge?......


I'm rooting for NFS (because of it's UNIX background)

NFS is *nix only unless you buy proprietary software for your Windows machines to connect to the NFS shares.

You only option most likely is Samba, unless you want to pay for the third party software, etc.

Really? well... that sucks...

But under a *nix network would it be better?

I've heard that it only authenticates basically by IP....

Is running both a problem?

Well, why don't do both?

Currently I have a samba server running nfs. I have a small environment and it seems to work just fine. All authentication is done via ldap so the uids and gids are consistent across all the boxes on the network. I find it that works really well in my environment. You may want to test it out and see if it works for you?

yeah I've heard about ldap.. aparently it can be used for mail too, sounds good I might try it once I get SMB working
