File sharing
Well just wondering how to allow connections between two linux boxes, cause they are seeing each other when i ping but i cant transfer files between the two and im not sure why. Like when from my main i do ping -c3 server.box it is 100% successful, but i go to do ftp server.box or ssh server.box connection is refused. They are both ubuntu breezy boxes, one is just a base install so as to save space for my soon to be apache server if i can first properly get it up on the network.

you need to set up some file sharing services on one or both boxes b4 you can share files. for example, set up an ftp server on one, and transfer files back and forth, or set up NFS or samba, sshd, etc. apache + ftp is a strong combination, but sshd is always good to have, too.
