fetchmail POP3 connection failed (SOCKET) status=2

I've been running fechmail without a problem for some time, but this morning it no longer retrieved mail on three machines on my LAN.

On this mechine I can no longer run fetchmail:

$ fetchmail: can't check while another fetchmail to same host is running
$ ps aux | grep fetchmail
[no fetchmail process]

On another machine:

$ fetchmail
POP3 connection to ... failed
Connection timed out
fetchmail: Query status=2 (SOCKET)
fetchmail: Connection errors for this pole

On another machine:

$ fetchmail -vc
... querying ... (protocol POP3) at Tue...: poll started
trying to connect to 216.239.133.234/110 connection failed

I tried to ping this IP address. 100% packet loss. This is correct IP address. I can ping other addresses. It sounds like my ISP is having trouble with its mail server. Does this seem to be the case?
Could it be a problem with the modem/router?

Did you try pinging a different address? If you can ping some other address on the internet, the problem is likely not your modem or router, assuming that no settings have been changed.

My first guess would be that the mail server is down for some reason, given that your fetchmail string is also unchanged.

Have you tried a traceroute? That could tell you where the connection is failing.

fetchmail POP3 connection failed (SOCKET) status=2 Reply to Thread

Frankbell,

Thanks for the reply. I solved the problem, which was that out of the blue I was being blacklisted. My first thought was that I had failed to enable SMTP authentication, but that was not the case. I believe the problem was that in my /etc/exim4/passwd.client file I had authentication for two email accounts, but left out an email account I never use. I don't believe anyone ever uses it, but when fetchmail automatically polls the mail server, it polls all three accounts. I suspect its effort every few minutes to poll the unauthenticated account was generating the errors that led to my being blacklisted.

Glad you got it working. Thanks for the "rest of the story"; your experience may help someone else.
