Question Fedora11 - wireless network doesn't work until after gnome desktop is loaded

Any one have any clues on how to get a wireless network card to work before starting gnome?

The card is managed by and only works when controlled by network manager via gnome.

I've checked the ifcfg-wlan1 and keys-wlan1 and they appear ok (ssid, key, hwaddr).

the card exists from iwconfig/ifconfig
