Question Fedora and internet connection

I recently installed Fedora on my Compaq computer to which I had added a US Robotics Winmodem. I have the "Official Fedora Companion Your Guide to the Fedora Project" and used the accompanying disks to install Fedora. My computer dials our server, Earthlink, and according to Earthlink, it responses back to my computer. However, my computer does not pick up on the response.

Previously, I had attempted to use Red Hat 9. I was able to connect to the Red Hat Registration page on the net after I installed the US Robotics Winmodem. However, Red Hat stated that it was no longer servicing Red Hat 9. Thus, although my computer made an INTERNET connection, I could not figure how to go beyond the Red Hat Home Page. When I called Red Hat, they told me, what was stated on the net, they were no longer servicing Red Hat 9, and besides, I had the publisher's version, not the official version, whatever that means.

My reason for using Fedora is the INTERNET. I have two teenage daughters. One lives on the INTERNET. Our windows XP system is being eaten alive by bugs despite Norton.

I am new to this forum and a novice at trying to figure out the computers, programs and the INTERNET.

Would appreciate any assistance.

Exactly what model was the modem, and what did you use for a driver? You should be a little bit more specific about the hardware so people have a better idea what the problem might be.

Sorry I did not give you more information. My computer is a Compaq Presario 6000. I installed a US Robotics hard drive modem, 56K Performance Pro Modem, number 5610B.

Thanks for your help.

If you haven't already, try downloading and installing the redhat version of the driver: http://www.usr.com/support/product-t...asp?prod=5610b
The diffrence between the publisher and official version is that they don't provide support if you don't buy the boxed version of Red Hat. You can download it for free, but you wont get any help from them. This is how they get the money to develop their distribution, so if you want help from them, you should consider buying instead of downloading. Although if you dont want or need support, its perfectly okay to just use the free version.
