Fedora 3 SLOW network

Installed FC3 on AMD64 & ASUS K8N, all seems well, network, sound cards found and working, BUT network access is very slow for everything. Checked DNS, hosts, etc. Ethtool doesn't work, says "operation not supported".
Computer is hooked thru Linksys switch, has been checked by connection direct to Motorola cable modem. All other machines (Win2K) are fine. Browsing takes 20sec to find a site, impossible to download.
FC3 box connected thru hub, switch and also direct, all with same result.
What do I check and how?
thanks

Try these tools: ping, traceroute, and tcpdump. Ping will indicate whether you can talk to a particular site. traceroute will show you where delays are occuring. tcpdump will expose higher level problems. You may need to run these tools as root.

I can ping sites on my LNA as well as WAN sites. Traceroute to www.radioparadise.com shows 15 hops, most around 35-50msec. tcpdump says a bunch of stuff....I cannot use the FC3 computer on email or for this forum - just too slow and half the pages do not load.

Well, the best thing to do is run TCPdump to where the delays are, but that can be a little complicated. Is this just a web browser problem? You mention something about e-mail. Do DNS lookups take a long time? Does the CPU load go up when you attempt to load a web page?

using yum or other command line WAN access is very slow including web browser. CPU is barely loafing at 2-4%. Only local network traffic seems to be ok. Noticed a few more posts out there with the same problem...

I experienced the same problem with fedora core 2 on a athlon desktop with nvidia chipset mobo. After upgrading the kernel, all was well. Just my two cents. I put FC3 on another athlon box I have and it works fine as is. Try a different kernel. good luck

Fedora 3 SLOW network

Tough to upgrade w/out network working....
OTOH,
Thanks for the info:

my results of grep eth0:

dmesg | grep eth0
divert: allocating divert_blk for eth0
eth0: forcedeth.c: subsystem: 01043:80a7 bound to 0000:00:05.0

thats it? Obviously something up here but what? This is NOT the same kind of message others have been reporting.
