Hi All,
Just wondering if there is a browser out there for linux worth anything more then squat. I have been at it for sometime now. I'm completely sick of Netscape constantly locking up. I occasionally download the new netscape and it allways acts the same.. Takes forever to open then locks up and goes by by. The older netscape is ok but obsolete. I tried galeon but JAVA doesn't work and hasn't for at least a year. Everytime you get a page with an applet it asks you to download the plugin.. Click the linux one and nothing happens. ( the windows plugin will download of course). I have used opera with some similar problems. My main complaint is linux is a great op sys for the net but NONE of the browsers I have used even come close to M$ explorer. I hate M$ as much as the next guy but IE kicks the S**t out of all the linux browsers. I'm quite frustrated at this point.

I have tried many machines.. 4 laptops and at least 10 desktops with linux and they all browse the same. Static boring pages display fine.. Get something with alittle more (java,jsp,asp,etc..) and it goes tits up..

Am I missing something or do you guys see the same results..

I haven't had any problems with Java in Mozilla or Galeon, although I had to install it manually.

One Linux forum has its reply box out of place in Konqueror. Other than that, I can live with it. At least, it lets me check e-mail.

Couldn't agree more. Nothing can come close to Internet Exploiter's and LookOut Distress's virus/trojan/dialer/spyware(Klez, Cydoor, B2d, eZula, etc.) spreading ability. I have anti-virus, anti-trojan/sandbox, firewall, ad/cookie killer, cache cleaner running at ALL time just so I can surf the Web on Windows in peace. I need none, NONE of the fancy things, on Linux. Though "crippled" Internet surfing experience. That's a trade-off, I guess.

If you really really really want IE, ask some how they managed to run IE & OE & Office under WINE. I have seen a screenshot.

IE and Office work with wine for me out of the box - still don't use it.

Opera 5 RPM Edition is good

I believe the lack of java support in galeon is the panishment for your laziness, as soon you set it up - nothing bits galeon, except lynx (no applets there :-)= )

The more I use it the more I like Opera. Havent got round to trying out the windows flavour yet, but just the ability to disable pop ups is a treasure.

Yep. I know what you mean. The fuzzy fonts thing drives me crazy. Konqueror is looking pretty good these days and Opera has come a long way. I have hope for Mozilla. Evolution looks pretty good for email and such. You might want to stick with a single distro until you know the ropes really well. Even a new version of a favorite distro will have new quirks to deal with. Under Windoze I had to finally give up on Netscape's browser -though I still use the email client. It's a wonder my machine even runs with pop-up killers, firewalls, ad removers, virus checkers, etc. running. IE does run under WINE, but I wouldn't bother with it. Hang in there!

that was a bad day. I was trying to work on a project using applet to servlet to mysql. The browser kept breaking. Any java programmer can tell you a broken browser can be a real red herring when trying to debug "good code". It seems that netscape and opera still have the market in linux browsers. I'll try the new opera download, its probably been a while since i tried the newest releases.

You said you don't like Netscape. I assume you're referring to the 4.xx version that came with your system. Have you tried version 6.23 yet. I downloaded it today. A simple installation, and it runs great on my Red Hat 7.3 system. I would recommend it. The fonts look great, and I haven't had any problems loading pages. Just go to netscape.com and click the download link.

It installs to /usr/local/netscape. You start it by typing netscape from that directory. I place a shortcut on the desktop to avoid having to type in the command.

I have tried downloading netscape 6 and it breaks during the install. I don't really have a standard install. I used redhat 7.2 to build the system on another laptop. I installed the harddrive in this one and built the new stable kernel for it. I have ximian running so an upgrade would break it. I'm not sure why the browser download is breaking down. I might try to get it again though. Last year sometime i abandoned netscape geckgo (sp) engine after frequent lock ups.. Thanks for all the info on this.. It's been bothering me for some time now. I'm working towards a lamur save linux setup for my win clients. Thats why I'm asking.

Anything to get MS off my networks.. right !?!

Don't know about netscape; mozilla works works best when you download the source and compile it yourself.

I tried netscapes download program today twice and both times ended up with a broken pipe error. It would be nice if the installer could resume a previous attempt. I'll try again later.. Thanks again for all the help

When downloading and installing Netscape, and you lose the connection, you can resume the download where it left off, if on the install you select the save files option.

Then when you run ./netscape-installer again it just picks up where it left off.
