The only other solution I would offer for slow internet is this.
http://www.freebsd.org/
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO...ook/index.html
That's how I solved Linux's buggy internet performance problem. I've also had that stalling out problem with kernel 2.4. I access the internet through a DSL router. That may have something to do with it. FreeBSD doesn't have any network performance problems. If you can't get Linux to serve you give BSD a try.

Hey Guys
You are all suffering dns issues, the problem wont be with the browser. Are you behind a router ? What is your setup in regards to connecting to your isp.

I have the same problem using Ubuntu 5.10 (breezy). It seems as though my internet connection 'falls asleep' at times and 'oscillates' doing that. Sometimes pages will load almost instantly and suddenly (it can change in an instant) it takes minutes to load a page or even times out. This is happens in firefox, as well as Galeon or Epiphany. It will just say "Connecting to site..." and nothing seems to happen. It happens with all pages really, from google to ubuntuguide.org. I think it even affects Kopete as my messages sometimes seem to take ages to send (don't know if the other person receives them anyway but I think not). I'm having none of these problems in Windows XP.
I'm new at linux and am open-minded to learning a new OS, but this is annoying me to a point where it drives me nuts and I'd rather use Windows for simple web browsing.
I'm using a VIA Rhine III ethernet adapter.
Someone please help me. It ticks me off to no end. Thanks in advance.

Try FreeBSD, it does not suffer from that stalling problem.
