Failed to connect in Linux, succeeded in Windows: why?

Hello to everybody.

I am experiencing something annoying.

These days, I am staying in a hotel and accessing the internet via the hotel wi-fi facility.

What I noted is this.

If I try to connect the internet under Windows and using Firefox, the connection is established and I can browse internet pages smoothly.

If I try to connect the internet using Linux Mint and Firefox, the connection is established but there is no way to load pages. Oddly, if I use elinks or other text browser, I can browse internet pages.

Also, this doesn't occur when I connect to different network (for instance at home, in different hotels, etc).

What prevents me to connect to internet under Linux?

Thank you.

In that case, shouldn't the question be why doesn't it connect at this hotel, since it works elsewhere? You haven't actually posted any information from your attempts to connect at this particular hotel for anyone to give you realistic advice.

The question should also be "What prevents me from browsing the internet with Firefox in Linux Mint <version name/number>"

Since you have already mentioned that other ( text based ) browsers work.
So Linux *is* connected to the internet.

Is Firefox setup with any special network settings ( like proxy )
any AddOns which enhance security ( pop up/under prevention, xss prevention , redirection prevention etc. )

You are right but the thing is that without doing anything but the usual procedure (for instance, type the SSID, set the correct encryption, type the username and password), in this hotel I am not able to surf the internet under Linux. This doesn't happen in other sites.
I did not change the configuration of Firefox in both Linux and Windows and in other wi-fi networks, Linux is my choice because the Windows partition contains the software needed for my work and I do not want to risk to have the computer "infected" or "turned unusable" because of something coming from the outside. I created a Linux partition in order to use the same "work" computer during extra-work hours. In case something goes wrong I will have to just format the partition and re-install Linux Mint.

So I thought that there was an explanation like "There are some morons using the software XYZ which doesn't recognize Linux. This software prevents Firefox to access web-pages."

Initially I thought it could be some screwup with ipv6 being miss-configured on the hotel wifi. But since you are able to browse with the text browsers I discounted that.

When you used the text browser, were you initially redirected to a 'terms of service' page where you had to agree not to do naughty things with their internet connection?

It could be that Firefox ( or addon ) has decided that the redirection is done in such a way that it looks 'nasty' and so is preventing it.

What kind of error does firefox display?
What Addons do you have?

try going into preferences --> Content and untick "block pop ups" , and see if that improves things.

While you are there, quickly check network settings ( advanced --> Network --> setting (button) )

Another chapter.
In a different hotel, using Linux I am able to access only some sites while is not possible to access other (for instance, I can't access my mail site or www.fifa.com or even facebook). If I switch to Windows, there is no problem. Everything works fine. What the hell could be?
