If Linux is more secure than Windows as well as allegedly less common, do I need to bother with a firewall in the first place? Aren't the hackers who take control of other computers and make them "zombies" looking for hapless Windows computers?
"If my house has stronger doors, do I need to bother locking them?"
Seriously, there are dozens of very simple iptables scripts out there that will do a really good job of keeping your computer safe. If you run any file & print services, ssh, or anything like that, it's important that you run a firewall. Without a firewall, people could try random usernames and passwords against samba until they get in.
Now don't be rude like the Linux snobs I used to see in Yahoo Chat. That thread was supposed to be titled "firewall," but the cursor may have been in the wrong spot.
