External Serial Modem problem. Data flow halts or

gets interrupted on and off. I should have a steady flow of data. What would cause this to happen? What setting should I check? Please Help. I'm on Suse 10, with IRQ 4 as my modem(ttyS0).I checked setserial and stty, both are set at around 115,200.
