Evil problems with DHCP

I'm on a university network running Mandrake 9.1 and DHCP is giving me problems. I've tried DrakConnect, that didn't work. I've made some stabs at messing around with configuration files, but none of those seem to have an effect.

Here's ifconfig in it's latest state:

Code:
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:4C:69:6E:75:79
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:1703910 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:25 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)    TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
          Interrupt:9 Base address:0xe400

eth0:9    Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:4C:69:6E:75:79
          inet addr:127.255.255.255 Bcast:127.255.255.2255  Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          Interrupt:9 Base address:0xe400

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1   Mask:255.0.0.0
          ~~~~etc~~~~
Forgive me for not posting it all, but I have to type it since I have no network connection with that machine. Luckily, I have another computer right next to it that is connected to the network.
Here's /etc/sysconfig/network:
Code:
HOSTNAME=raphaelite.uvm.edu
NETWORKING=yes
And here's /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:
Code:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes
NEEDHOSTNAME=no
I've been poking around for the last few hours looking for an answer to this, and I've tried a bunch of things. I set my ip to a static nonroutable (192.168.10.10) and pinged myself (successfully), so I know it's working. I've had momentary success by declaring my own static ip (it works for five minutes or less), although doing so is directly against UVM network policy, so I'm not too hot on doing that for the long term. UVM doesn't route ping or tracert packets, so I'm SOL as far as that's concerned.
What's really infuriating is that I was running Slackware before break and had almost no problem getting on the network (it wouldn't let me back on the network when I got back from winter break, which spurred the change in distro which I had been planning for a few months).
Thanks, all. And I'm really sorry if this is a stupid question. I have little experience as a Linux admin.
well what actually is happening on the DHCP side? if you run "dhcpcd -d eth0" you should get plenty of information from teh dhcp server, if you even hit one... maybe you need to register the mac address to access the server?
It doesn't seem to be finding a DHCP server, but I don't know why not. This machine (the one I'm writing this message on) is sitting on the same hub as the Linux machine and grabs DHCP fine.
The university has no policy about registering mac addresses.
Here's the message from dhcpcd:
Code:
[root@raphaelite root]# dhcpcd -d eth0
dhcpcd: MAC address = 00:4c:69:6e:75:79
[.....a bit of waiting......]
[root@raphaelite root]# /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd.exe: line 27: .: filename argument required
.: usage: . filename
The last message concerns me because it came after the command prompt, but before(?) the program closed. It looks to me like a runtime error message, but I can't be sure.
[edit]
Yeah, I looked at the filename in question and it's an error (of some sort). I don't know what exactly it is and what I should be looking for in order to fix it, though...
