Okay, now THAT was a pain in the ass to type out. But I've checked it for typos, and I didn't find any.

Now for the problem: none of the settings in ifconfig change, no matter what I do. netconfig does nothing, ifconfig with switches does nothing...bleh. I had internet all last night just fine. I reboot and BAM...nothing. I fresh installed Slack again, and tried resetting everything, but it didn't work.

Help?

[update?]
I'm using a wired connection, and in the base station manager (Microsoft MN-500 Wireless Base Station) my slack box still shows up in the DHCP Client List with an IP, but on its old name ("WorkGroup"). The little LED on the station itself also says it detects the computer, so I know the card is not at fault for that. But my additional question is why does my box still appear on the network but with its old name even after a complete format and clean install?

For future reference, try cutting & pasting from a console window.

Now, a brief Google search told me that your SMC-1211TX network card is supported under Linux by the RTL-8139 driver. So, you should be ale to "modprobe" the module thus:

# modprobe 8139too

Then, if you do this:

# dhcpcd eth0

You should end up with 2 interfaces in the output of "ifconfig" - lo (which is the local loopback) and eth0.

To make sure that this works upon reboot, edit "/etc/rc.d/rc.modules" and uncomment the 8139too driver (somewhere around line # 422 of that file). Also make sure that you have "USE_DHCP[0]="yes" on line 19 of "/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf".

I think that's more to do with Windows & the way it stores network settings.

Thanks a bunch! It worked.

The reason I typed it out was because I have no network, so I would have been able to copy and paste it, but not get it on to the internet... I sat in front of my console with my dad's laptop and notepad open.

Hm. Stupid Windows.
