I appologize - I am in a bad spot right now and really need my problem solved is all. I promiss I will be a contributing member, I understand and I am not leaching just for the help. Again, appologies, I know it's rude and annoying - I am a moderator of many boards - It's just that I need my problem solved - and needed it solved 2 weeks ago

Again, I'm truly sorry.

Are you sure there's a DHCP server on your network? The broadcast should go out to everyone (255.255.255.255) so if there's an appropriate server it should respond. Who's responsible for the DHCP server operation?

Well i have no idea. All I know is that I am using Optimum Online's cable service and a Linksys router. lol. How would I check if there was a DHCP server?

I tried doing dhcpcd eth0 and I found something interesting:

I can do 'ifconfig eth0 up' fine without any errors and get ifconfig and get an eth0 section - however, when I do dhcpcd eth0, and then do ifconfig again, the eth0 section dissapears. Interesting, eh? lol.

It could be that there isn't a DHCP server. You could have a static IP. In which case you ignore the dhclient command and put it into this command: ifconfig eth0 up <IP address>. You'll have to ask your ISP what your IP address is or try to find it in an existing (and working) windows installation. While your talking to your ISP you can ask if they have a DHCP server (that's how you check hehehe). Although going on what you've gotten from dhclient they probably don't.

One more thing...

dhcpcd? That's the daemon. You use that if you want to be the DHCP server.
