Ethernet card not working on bootup!!

Hi, im a beginner at linux, so this may be something i have just overlooked

When i boot my linux machine (running RedHat 9) it boots fine and tells me that eth0 has been started.

However, the interface doesnt work until i type:

ifdown eth0

then

ifup eth0

, and it then works fine

However, this is a major nuisance and causes other services especially httpd to fail to start on bootup.

The network card is an Accton SMC 1211TX, which uses the RealTek RTL8139 chipset

The driver in use is '8139too'

One thing worth noting is before i re-start the connection, it shows an Rx error count of 2 (in ifconfig).

I dont know if this is relevant

Thanks

Right after booting, if you run ifconfig can you see eth0? Does it have the IP address it should have?

Yes

Yes, it has the correct settings right after booting. The Transmitted packet count is usually high but the Recieved packets count is always 0 with erros count at 2.

However, i have got so fed up with redhat in general (its too bloated for the K6-2 400 / 128MB / 10GB that i am running it on)

So i have replaced it with Debian

And i hope the problem wont re-occur!!

Thanks anyway :-)
