Ethernet card error

I am running Debian, kernel version 2.4.0 (have been for months now) and I woke up this morning to find my machine spitting out the same error constantly (which is being sent to the kernel log and syslog):

eth0 (NNNNNNNN): System Error Occured

NNNNNN seems to be just an incremental number.

I tried rebooting, but with no such luck. It's stopped sending the error, but ifconfig doesnt recognize eth0.

Has anyone had this happen before? Has my NIC just died? Or is there some other problem?

I think my network card is some sort of Linksys card.

If nothing's changed on the software front then it sounds like you probably have a hardware problem. If I were you I'd get another NIC and try that to see if it corrects your problem.
