ethernet setup
Hi,
I'm running Mandrake 7.2 and I'm trying to get adsl working. I'm using rpppoe in an attempt to do accomplish this task. In any case, when I boot up my computer, the light on my internal ethernet card is green, but when i try and start adsl w/ the command "adsl-start" the modem light dissappears, and as a result I can't connect. I know that mandrake recongnizes my ethernet card because I saw it's name printed in the setup under "HarDrake". Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Just because Mandrake says it saw it does not mean it is used properly. Try finding the exact make/model/manufacturer of the card. Once you've done that, try finding out what module it's supposed to use ( http://lhd.datapower.com) Once you've determined those things, type at a command prompt (as root):
lspci
If the adapter is listed correctly, type:
lsmod
and make sure that the module is loaded. If either of these commands does not report the information for your network card, it is not being detected properly by the OS. Try a different card.

Well, the module (driver) for the kid seems to have loaded, and it ifconfig'd itself back down when it chocked on getting a link from the adsl modem. The modem, all by itself, makes DSLAM, the connection of the modem to the provider, which is the green light. Now, how BellSouth and Earthlink run it with their alcatel's, and a number of their other modems, is if you don't authenticate right, then it will drop DSLAM. Check to make sure you have all of the info in the roaring penguin script dead on. For instance, Earthlink requires that your username be your fully qualified e-mail address, @earthlink.com and all...
Cheers,
Finegan
