eth0 shutdown fails and browser problems

I installed RH9 and things seemed to be working fine. Then after doing the RHN updates i've found 3 problems:

1) Whenever I reboot or shutdown eth0 fails to shutdown.
2) Whenever I boot up i get this error on the souncard start:
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000
modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3
and the sound doesnt work.
3) Whenever i attempt to submit information in a browser (I've tried 2 mozilla based browsers Mozilla, Firebird, and Netscape) the browser hangs and stops responding. I have to do a kill -9 pids for the browser and relaunch. This even happens when i goto google, type something in to search for, then hit the "google search" button, it freezes.

Any ideas?

TIA!

1. Check your /etc/hosts file and make sure the first line is there. Your file may not have the hostname or other IPs if you haven't set that yet. My file:
Code:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 uilleann localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.1 uilleann
192.168.0.2 tinwhistle
192.168.0.3 bones
2. Try:

redhat-config-soundcard

for your sound card.

3. Try putting the nameserver numbers from your ISP in the file /etc/resolv.conf. Here is mine:
Code:
domain infoave.net
nameserver 206.74.254.2
nameserver 204.116.57.2

RedHat 8.0 Tips & Tricks

# Redhat 7.3 down configuration commands

# Redhat 7.3 up configuration commands
Configure soundcard:
redhat-config-soundcard
Configure X server:
redhat-config-xfree86
Configure network:
redhat-config-network

Have the same problem myself with the network card after using up2date for the latest updates, it just sits there hanging when I shutdown or reboot.

I've attributed it to the kernel update it did, only happens when I boot up using that version. My techy soultion was just to boot up using the version I was having before and just sitting it out waiting to see if any further updates are coming that resolve the problem although if someone comes up with a soultion in the mean time I'll be happy to hear.

So the kernel causes the eth0 shutdown problems? I've already uninstalled it... Might have to go back...

Um, the rest of my networking is working fine, just submitting data doesnt seem to work. Here is my hosts file:

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 BigBox localhost.localdomain localhost
169.254.2.41 BigBox.prozach.com www.prozach.com BigBox.barbarianmotorsports.com BigBox.barbarianmotorsports.net BigBox.barbarianmotorsports.org www.barbarianmotorsports.org mail.prozach.com
169.254.2.45 littlebox.prozach.com littlebox
169.254.2.42 linuxbox.prozach.com linuxbox

and here is my resolv.conf file:

nameserver 204.127.202.4
nameserver 209.84.13.20
nameserver 66.37.215.45
nameserver 216.148.277.68
nameserver 206.124.66.242
nameserver 206.124.64.253
domain prozach.com
domain barbarianmotorsports.com
domain barbarianmotorsports.net
domain barbarianmotorsports.org

The redhat-config-soundcard just pops up with a box saying that it detected my sb audigy and it allows me to play a test sound and that's it. If i play a test sound, nothing comes out. If i say ok it says: The audigy driver could not be loaded. This soundcard may not be compatible with Red Hat Linux.
