Unhappy eth0 Operation failed

Hi I am a newbie as far as linux goes.
I tried installing RH6.1 on my HP Pavillion which used to run ME till yesterday.
I have a DSL modem that is connected to NetGear RT314 DSL Router. I have 3 pcs connected to the router and it works fine. The router assigns 192.168.0.2-4 based on the availability.
One of the 3 pcs I reinstalled with RH6.1. Genome Workstation.
The OS got loaded fine. But at the boot time I got a failure in detecting eth0. it said something like eth0 Operation failed.
Ofcourse I am not able to ping localhost or any other ip address now from the linux m/c.
I have a NetGear 310Tx and downloded and compiled tulip.c from their website.
when I do a ifconfig I get only lo.
I went to linuxconf and in the basic host settings I left IP address as blank, NetMast as blank, device is eth0 and kernal module is tulip.
I am sure I am missing something here, but not able to really fix it.
Can anyone help this newbie?
I have some basic questions like, how should my /etc/hosts look like? If my router assigns IP address randomly is that my nameserver? how should my /etc/resolv.conf look like etc....
I guess this is a right place to get my questions answered.

Thanks a bunch in advance
