eth0 just won't start on boot

The problem here is that I can't get my eth0 adapter to start on boot. It's configured to start on boot. When I boot, the bringing up network, starting eth0 says OK. When I login to my computer, the eth0 is not up at all. I have to manually start it by ifup eth0. I just installed the 2.6.1 kernel and I wasn't having this problem before. Any ideas?

if that's what happened, put the command ifup eth0 on /etc/rc.d/rc.local to automatically execute.

Thanks, that fixed it. However, say I am in a new location and obtaining a new IP address takes a while for my machine to do. How do I set a time limit for it?
